Google Ads RSA character counter

Paste headlines and descriptions, one per line. Every line gets a live count against Google's 30- and 90-character limits, with flags for duplicates, all-caps, exclamation marks in headlines, and asset counts against the 15/4 maximums — plus a preview of how the ad renders.

Google assembles RSAs from up to 3 headlines and 2 descriptions per impression — the preview shows one possible combination. Counts include spaces; Dynamic Keyword Insertion and countdown customizers count by their default text, not the syntax.

Google Ads character limits, all in one place

A responsive search ad gives you 30 characters per headline (3 to 15 of them) and 90 characters per description (2 to 4), spaces included. Display path fields add two more slots of 15. Blow a limit and the Google Ads interface trims your line mid-thought — usually right where the offer was. This checker counts every line as you type or paste, so nothing gets truncated on the way in.

What gets flagged, and why

Counting the tricky cases

Counts include spaces and punctuation. Ad customizers count by their default text, not their syntax: a Dynamic Keyword Insertion tag like {KeyWord:running shoes} counts as “running shoes” — 13 characters, not 25. If your lines use customizers, check them by their longest possible substitution, because Google enforces the limit against whatever actually renders. The preview shows one combination the way Google assembles it: up to three headlines pipe-separated, two descriptions run together.

Frequently asked questions

What are the character limits for Google Ads?

Responsive search ads allow 30 characters per headline and 90 per description, counting spaces. You can add 3–15 headlines and 2–4 descriptions per ad, plus two 15-character display path fields.

Do spaces count toward Google Ads character limits?

Yes. Spaces and punctuation both count. "Free Shipping On Orders $50+" is 28 characters including spaces, so it fits the 30-character headline limit.

Can I use exclamation marks in Google Ads headlines?

No. Google's editorial policy disallows exclamation marks in headlines; you may use one in a description. Repeated punctuation (!!, ??) and gratuitous all-caps are disallowed everywhere in ad text.

How does Dynamic Keyword Insertion affect the character count?

DKI counts by what renders, not by the syntax. Google enforces the 30/90 limit against the substituted keyword — or the default text when the keyword is too long — so check your longest keyword against the limit, not the tag itself.
