What UTM parameters do

UTM parameters are tags on the end of a URL that tell your analytics where a click came from. utm_source names the referrer (google, newsletter), utm_medium names the channel (cpc, email), utm_campaign names the push (fall_sale), and the optional utm_term and utm_content carry the keyword and the ad variant. GA4 reads them automatically — no configuration required.

The rules that keep reporting clean

UTMs and Google Ads auto-tagging

Google Ads auto-tagging (the GCLID) already passes richer data to GA4 than manual UTMs can, so for most accounts the right move is auto-tagging on and manual UTMs reserved for everything else — email, social, partnerships, offline QR codes. If you do run both, keep “override auto-tagging” off in GA4 unless you have a specific reason, or the manual tags will win and flatten your Ads reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Which UTM parameters are required?

utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign are the conventional minimum for clean reporting; GA4 technically accepts any subset. utm_term and utm_content are optional refinements for keyword and ad-variant detail.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes. Analytics tools treat "Email" and "email" as different values and split your reporting across them. Lowercase everything and pick one convention for separators — this builder lowercases values by default.

Do I need UTMs on Google Ads links if auto-tagging is on?

Usually not. Auto-tagging's GCLID passes more detail to GA4 than manual UTMs, and manual tags can override it if GA4 is set to prefer them. Use manual UTMs for channels without auto-tagging: email, organic social, partners, QR codes.
